What does pet insurance cover?
The report details the most common coverages within these insurances, which include:
- Civil liability for material or personal damages that pets may cause to third parties.
- Veterinary care in case of accident or illness.
- Management of the death of the animal, including removal of the body.
It is important to note that this study has focused exclusively on pet-specific insurance and has not included data from home insurance, although the latter may also offer coverage for damage caused by animals.
Distribution of claims in pet insurance policies
According to the data collected, most of the incidents reported (52%) are related to civil liability for property damage caused by pets. Veterinary services account for 37.9% of insurance interventions. Other cases include:
- Personal damages to third parties: 3.9%.
- Removal of the body after death of the animal: 3%.
- Other benefits: 3.2%.
Average cost of insured incidents
The amount of claims varies according to the type of mishap. The most costly are those related to personal damages to third parties, with an average of 688 euros per incident, which can exceed 1,000 euros in the most serious cases.
On the other hand, material damages to third parties have an average cost of 288 euros, while veterinary expenses amount to 203 euros on average. Finally, the management of the removal of the body in the event of the pet's death costs an average of 269 euros.
Differences by autonomous community
The report also highlights regional differences in pet insurance coverage. In most of the autonomous communities, the main coverage is civil liability for property damage. However, in Catalonia and Castilla y León, veterinary assistance predominates, while in the Community of Madrid, both coverages are used in similar proportions.
