The reports of loss received by Agroseguro in recent days confirm the "serious impact" on the field that have caused the frosts recorded during the bridge of San José, specifically since Thursday, March 18, when temperatures began a sharp decline -accentuated overnight-, which continued until Tuesday, March 23. In total, the affected area is close to 38,000 hectares insured, distributed among more than 31,100 plots, mostly fruit, almond and wine grape crops. The estimated compensation amounts to 55 million euros.
The frosts that occur once spring has begun are particularly damaging to crops and have become almost a constant in recent years. Agroseguro emphasizes that the damages caused by these atmospheric phenomena are covered by the agricultural insurance system.
Damage in the Ebro Valley: Catalonia and Aragon
The province of Lleida, and especially the regions of Segrià and Noguera, recorded most of the 8,800 insured hectares affected in Catalonia, mostly fruit trees such as peaches, pears, apples and apricots, although the damage extends to other crops such as almond trees and wine grapes.
In the case of Aragon, damage reports have been received from 8,200 insured hectares, mostly in the Huesca regions of Litera and Bajo Cinca, although the damage also extends to Zaragoza municipalities such as La Almunia and Calatayud. Stone fruit, especially peaches, as well as almond trees, are the most affected crops, although pears, apples and cherries have also suffered the effects of low temperatures.
