The insurance covers 235,000 industrial accidents each year.

Insurance solves 235,000 industrial accidents every year. These are events of all kinds. From fires to machinery breakdowns, assembly failures and unforeseen events during transport. This is one of the conclusions of the report Industrial insurance in Spain recently published by Estamos Seguros, the insurance culture dissemination initiative developed by Unespa.

The paper analyzes a sample of adverse events occurring between the second half of 2019 and the first half of 2020. The data was provided by 16 insurers. According to this information, two out of three events are solved by Multi-Risk insurance. This protection groups together in a single contract the various problems that can affect a company. Other common mishaps are transport incidents, either due to damage to the vehicle itself or to the goods being transported.

According to Unespa, an average industrial mishap usually entails an insurance payout of 3,862 euros. The seriousness of incidents varies greatly depending on the nature of the problem. For example, "while a failure in electronic equipment is usually solved with the disbursement of 731 euros, the cost of an incident in an assembly is usually around 33,000 euros", it is highlighted.

Then there are the extreme cases. "insurers have even paid out 832,611 euros for failures in the assembly of an infrastructure, another 184,017 euros for problems at a construction site and even 179,580 euros for damage to a vehicle carrying goods," it adds.

"Payments made in 2019 by insurance to the industry in Spain in terms of indemnities and repairs amounted to 3,100 million euros," it is stated from Unespa. This is the result of information prepared by Estamos Seguros based on data from the Directorate General of Insurance and Pension Funds (DGSFP) and the National Statistics Institution (INE).

The insurance employers' association points out that a peculiarity of industrial incidents is that they are more common in very small towns (less than 10,000 inhabitants) and in the largest municipalities in Spain (more than half a million residents). In medium-sized towns (10,000 to 500,000 inhabitants), fewer incidents occur than would be expected based on their demographic weight. The ranking of cities with the most industrial accidents is led by the largest towns in Spain. Madrid is at the top, followed by Barcelona and Valencia.
